Perk Up For Spring: Things to Clean And Organize
Can you believe it? It’s almost springtime again!
March 19th will bring in another spring season. Many of us anticipate this time of year, thankful for the fresh perspective it can provide. The longer days and warmer temperatures encourage us to get up, get out, and live like normal humans again.
Like some animals, we “wake up” from our winter hibernation with a solid desire to prepare our homes for fresh spring breezes and sunny days. First, we clean everything. We make everything shiny and new, from the backyard to the bedroom, prepping every space for fresh spring upgrades like lighter bed linens and maybe even a new rug.
Next, it’s time to get really organized. Revisit that New Year’s to-do list of all the areas you had planned to “get together” at the beginning of the year. There is no shame in having some projects left—that’s what spring is for!

Things to Clean at Home this Spring
Get exterior ready
Inspect the exterior of your home thoroughly, checking from the roof to the foundation for any abnormalities. This is a great chance to wash the windows, power wash the walkways, maintain lawn and garden tools, and spruce up the porch furniture.
Spruce up the kitchen
Get rid of any remaining Christmas cookie supplies hidden in the back of the pantry, give the stove backsplash a good polish, clean out the vegetable drawers in the fridge, and remove any grime from those tricky spots around appliances. Investing a few hours in these tasks will brighten up your kitchen and prepare it for preparing nutritious spring dishes.
Create calm in the bedroom
Create a fresh and airy space in the bedroom for spring by clearing out any clutter, starting with the side tables. Next, replace heavy winter bedding with lighter quilts and coverlets. Additionally, consider switching deep-pile rugs with flat-weave or natural-fiber options for the warmer seasons. And as you freshen up your bedroom, remember to rotate your mattress. Don’t forget to add some spring flowers.
Update and freshen the bathrooms
Clean your shower and bathtub thoroughly. Wash the bath mats and shower curtains and replace any old or worn-out towels. Use a bathroom cleaner to scrub the tiles and grout. Attack the toilet and countertops. Finally, dispose of expired medication appropriately.
Everything is clean! Now it’s time to get organized!
Things to Organize at Home this Spring
Conquer your closets
Assess what you have stored in all of your closets, then determine which ones need to be sorted through and reorganized. The bedroom closets are a good place to begin since we are preparing for the spring and summer months. Filter your clothes, upgrade hangers, and add some functional closet accessories like baskets and hooks. Use this same idea for the closets in other areas of your home. Don’t forget the dreaded coat closet!
Keep up with the kitchen
The kitchen can be hard to keep up with since it tends to be a central location in the home. Things constantly get messy and are often left out of place, especially if you have kids (younger and older) who leave crumb trails or can help themselves to a snack. That’s why setting up organizational processes in this space can be a lifesaver. Invest in storage solutions such as baskets, containers, shelves, or drawer organizers to keep things in place. Don’t forget to use labels! Need some inspo? Read this past blog post for some ideas.
Remember nontraditional spaces
Remember to give areas like the playroom, basement, and mudroom a little extra attention. Items like old toys, broken sports equipment, and outgrown shoes/coats may need to be removed. Systems may need to be upgraded or reworked to better accommodate a new routine. Take a look at this article on How to Organize Sports Gear for some helpful tips!
Mudrooms are also often overlooked due to various items that end up here and sometimes never leave. Creating areas for specific things will help to keep this area clean from clutter.
